Vol. 269 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Prices.

13.

Mr. Kitt

asked the Minister for Lands if he will ensure that the Forestry Division of his Department offer realistic prices for lands suitable for afforestation.

The price paid for land suitable for State afforestation is determined by reference to anticipated timber yield and the production costs likely to be incurred in its development. I am satisfied that this forms a realistic basis for determining the prices to be offered for suitable land.

Mr. Kitt

Because of the confusion in the House I was unable to hear the Minister.

Perhaps we can help the Deputy by having the answer repeated.

The reply to the question was:

The price paid for land suitable for State afforestation is determined by reference to anticipated timber yield and the production costs likely to be incurred in its development. I am satisfied that this forms a realistic basis for determining the prices to be offered for suitable land.

Mr. Kitt

Would the Minister remind the Minister for Lands that in these changing times within the EEC we have much cut-away bog and other land that is suitable for afforestation purposes but that the price being offered by the Forestry Division is unrealistic? There are many acres of such land in Galway the acquisition of which would result in much employment. It would also be a good investment for the future.

I will bring these points to the attention of the Minister for Lands.
