Vol. 269 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Entrance Qualifications.

30.

asked the Minister for Education the educational qualifications required for entry to the courses in (a) veterinary science and (b) agricultural science at UCD and Trinity College, Dublin.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a summary of the matriculation and faculty requirements for veterinary medicine and agricultural science.

I might mention that there is no agricultural science faculty in Trinity College.

Following is the information:

Matriculation Requirements.

1. The Matriculation Regulations of the National University of Ireland which govern admission to the Constituent Colleges of the University, including UCD, provide that candidates who present themselves for the Matriculation Examination and who are not already exempted in any subject or subjects, must select at least six but not more than seven subjects according to Faculty requirements, as follows:

Agriculture: Veterinary Medicine

(i) Irish; (ii) English; (iii) Mathematics; (iv) another language from the Matriculation Programme; (v) a Laboratory Science subject; (vi) any other subject of the Matriculation Programme not already selected.

The following subjects only are regarded as Laboratory Science subjects:

Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics-with-Chemistry. The Regulations further provide that if the number of applications for admission to a Faculty exceeds the number for which space is available, selection will be made on the basis of scholastic record.

2. In the case of Trinity College, Dublin, it is a requirement for admission to the School of Veterinary Medicine that, in addition to satisfying the minimum conditions for Matriculation, a candidate must have high grades in at least two of the three subjects, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, at the University Matriculation Examination or its recognised equivalent. If these do not include Physics, a qualification in Mathematics is expected.

Full particulars are set out in the Matriculation Regulations published by the Universities.
