Vol. 269 No. 9

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Programme.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of houses on which construction work started in the quarter January to March, 1973, as compared with the quarter July to September, 1973.

The statistics in the form requested are not available. The quarterly bulletin of housing statistics shows that 13,133 dwellings have been begun or authorised in the quarter ended 31st March, 1973, as compared with 6,608 in the quarter ended 30th September, 1973. The former figure is influenced by the efforts of builders to have grants authorised before the introduction of price control for private grant-aided houses.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary concede that there has been a big fall off in starts?

They have reduced from 13,000 to 6,000.

We will reach our target of 25,000 houses.
