Vol. 269 No. 9

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish and Bird Populations.

47.

asked the Minister for Lands when he will be in a position to announce plans to prevent ecological disturbance to fish and bird populations.

(Cavan): Some practical measures in this sphere are already being taken within the existing limited statutory framework, particularly through the declaration of bird sanctuaries. It is expected that projected legislation, when enacted, will lead to an accentuation and expansion of these activities.

My Department is not responsible for fish.

Would the Minister's Department consider subventions to private persons who can give a fair guarantee for what I might call preservation areas for game?

I know that my Department is co-operating with private individuals in declaring bird sanctuaries under the Preservation of Game Act, 1930, and a number of private sanctuaries or lands in private ownership have been declared sanctuaries.

Where a bird sanctuary at present exists and is apparently operating properly, would the Minister consider extending the number of places where imported birds can be kept in quarantine for the required period over and above what is available now?

(Cavan): That is obviously a separate question. I have no information on the file in regard to the quarantine stations available but if the Deputy wants me to deal with that I shall do so if he either writes to me——

Would this be a matter for the Minister or the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries?

(Cavan): That shows it is a completely different question.

Could I, through the Chair, ask Deputy Lemass what is the reason for his question on this matter?

I am the spokesman on environmental matters for this party.
