Vol. 269 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Geriatric Units.

4.

asked the Minister for Health the number and location of geriatric units in Dublin; the total number of beds involved; and if he is satisfied that this number meets the geriatric bed requirements of the Dublin area.

Particulars about geriatric assessment and rehabilitation units in Dublin general hospitals were given in my answer to the Deputy's Parliamentary Questions of 17th July, 1973.

As regards long stay geriatric units for the aged in Dublin provided by public authorities, I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, to circulate with the Official Report, details of this accommodation. I believe the accommodation available satisfies reasonably current demands.

The following are the particulars: St. Brigid's Home, Crooksling, 207 beds; Brú Chaoimhín, 275 beds; St. Clare's, Ballymun, 92 beds; St. Laurence O'Toole Centre (Old Coombe Home), 18 beds; Clonskeagh Fever Hospital, 18 beds; St. Mary's, Phoenix Park, 322 beds; St. James's Hospital, 358 beds; James Connolly Memorial Hospital, 137 beds.

Is the Minister aware that doctors are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain beds for geriatric patients or patients in the older age group who require beds? Is the Minister aware that such patients are not admitted by virtue of the fact that they are over 65 or 70 years of age? I should like the Minister to look into this matter in view of the fact that a hospital which was catering for such patients, St. James's, has cleared out the geriatric section of that hospital.

I will do what the Deputy requests.
