Vol. 269 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Vocational School.

34.

asked the Minister for Education if plans with his Department for the repair and extension of Stranorlar vocational school. County Donegal have yet been approved.

Mr. R. Burke

My Department recently approved the repair of the heating system at Stranorlar vocational school. Approval for the provision of extra toilets will be given shortly. The existing classroom accommodation is regarded as adequate for the present enrolment.

Would the Minister not agree that the proposals for a community school at Stranorlar would influence the question of whether there is sufficient accommodation at the vocational school?

Mr. R. Burke

The present enrolment at the vocational school is 215 and I am informed that there is sufficient accommodation there for upwards of 250 students.

Is the Minister saying that the question of the establishment of a community school at Stranorlar is not under active consideration at present?

Mr. R. Burke

Yes, it is.

Is the Minister aware of the difficulty being experienced in the obtaining of oil supplies from the contractors for the Stranorlar schools and that these schools have had no heating so far this year and, secondly, can he say whether in view of the agreement that was reached locally long ago on the amalgamation of the schools, that is, the secondary and the vocational, these further repairs which are now being sanctioned are an indication that we may have to wait a long time for the amalgamation and the community school on which the local grouping seems to have reached agreement?

Mr. R. Burke

I do not understand the situation to be that local agreement has been reached.

About three or four years ago.
