Vol. 269 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leaving Certificate Failures.

41.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students who failed the 1972 leaving certificate examination because of their failure to obtain a pass in the subject Gaeilge; and if he will express this number as a percentage of the total who sat for that examination.

Mr. R. Burke

The number of students who did not qualify for the award of the leaving certificate in 1972 because of failure to obtain grade D or higher in Irish was 86. This represents 0.4 per cent of the total who sat for the examination.

Has the Deputy any supplementary to ask on that?

Enough said. Silence is far more powerful than words at times.

Mr. R. Burke

I share the Deputy's pleasure that the figure was so small but I am sure he will share my pleasure that it has been eliminated completely.
