Vol. 269 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. - Killarney Vocational School.

76.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that since he has refused to sanction an additional teacher for Killarney vocational school, County Kerry, a local industry could not employ its usual annual intake of 12 apprentices this year; and if he will reconsider the position.

An additional metalwork teacher was not allocated by my Department for Killarney vocational school as accommodation and other facilities available there are not adequate to provide for additional instruction of the high standard necessary to meet modern requirements. Apprentices from Killarney are receiving the requisite instruction at Tralee technical college on the basis of day release. I understand that the decision to reduce the intake of apprentices was made by the local manufacturer and is not related either to the availability of metalwork teachers or metalwork teaching facilities in Killarney.
