Vol. 270 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teaching of History.

363.

asked the Minister for Education if he considers it possible to teach a meaningful history course from one text book.

It is unwise to generalise about teaching methods: much depends on the skill and personality of the individual teacher. In so far as the use of a textbook is advisable at all nowadays, it should be treated only as a handy compendium of basic facts. As the emphasis in our new school history programmes is on skills rather than on mere recall, it is highly desirable that pupils be introduced to a variety of historical materials and resources.
