asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government have recognised the new regime in Chile; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have taken no action involving recognition of the present regime in Chile. We have, of course, long recognised the state of Chile.

May I say that we would be most anxious to see the end of repressive measures and the restoration of democratic rule in Chile.

Have the Government taken any action to alleviate the condition of Chilean citizens who may have been deported or otherwise as a result of the coup d'état in Chile?

This is a matter of recognition.

In the absence of representation in Chile we are not in a position to help on the spot. The Deputy will appreciate that. The Government have, however, decided to admit a number of Chilean refugees and their families.

Does the English embassy act on our behalf in Chile?

That is a separate question and I do not carry in my head a note of who represents us in the 115 countries of the world where we are not represented ourselves.

In view of the Minister's concern for the Chileans what about our own people who are held——

That is a separate question.

——nearer home? Be a little bit realistic.

We are talking about refugees from a country where a democratic regime was overturned by military dictatorship.

Where are they? Britain and the Six Counties.
