Vol. 270 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Post Office.

26.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will agree to the provision of a post office in Donaghmede shopping centre, County Dublin, to serve the 2,500 families living in the area.

There are three sub-post offices within approximately a mile of the area mentioned. It is, however, the intention to establish another office in the neighbourhood subject to a suitable applicant being forthcoming for the post of sub-postmaster and the necessary steps will be taken shortly. Housing development in the area is still, I am happy to say, continuing.

At the moment people from the Donaghmede area, which is a suburb of the city, find themselves having to go—I contest the figures given by the Minister—up to one mile——

A question Deputy, please.

It is relevant that these people must go up to one mile——

The Deputy must ask a question.

In view of the fact that people have to go up to a mile to get to the post office in this newly developed and large area of Donaghmede, would the Minister not consider as a matter of priority the opening of a post office in the Donaghmede shopping centre? This would be convenient for all people moving into the area.

I have had a number of representations from residents' associations and others in this and nearby areas. I am considering these and hope to take a decision shortly.

In view of the urgency of the situation could the Minister inform the House when "shortly" is, because we have had experience of "shortly" from his colleagues?
