Vol. 270 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin School.

66.

andMr. Walsh asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the Coolmine Community School, Blanchardstown, County Dublin, (a) the number of science laboratories provided and (b) the number of laboratories which are fully equipped and operational; and if he will make a statement on the unsatisfactory position in this regard.

Mr. R. Burke

Two science laboratories and a demonstration room have already been provided. A further science laboratory is being provided and will be available in the near future.

The provision already made of two science laboratories and the demonstration room is adequate to the needs of a school of 500 pupils and the current enrolment in the school is only 398. The provision of the third laboratory will enable the school to cater for a complement of about 1,000 pupils in due course.

I am sure the Minister will accept that a laboratory without equipment is not much use. Can the Minister say whether the two laboratories in question are fully equipped?

Mr. R. Burke

The delay in completing the second laboratory has been due to the non-availability of water and gas taps. This is due to a world shortage of these items, over which I have no control. I would add that the order was placed in April, 1973, and if there was a delay it can be put down to other matters.

Surely the Minister must accept responsibility for the students involved? They will be asked to sit for the same examinations as other students who have the use of facilities in properly equipped laboratories.

Mr. R. Burke

My information is there was a delay and I have given the facts. I understand the order was being fully completed at the end of January.

Would the Minister accept that the teachers threatened to strike last week because they were so frustrated by the lack of co-operation in this matter displayed by the Department?

Mr. R. Burke

They may have been frustrated but they should vent their frustration on those responsible.

Can the Minister state when he is going out there?

Mr. R. Burke

I shall be going to open it fairly soon.
