Vol. 270 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Border Stations.

132.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of married sergeants and gardaí of over 25 years' service who were temporarily transferred to Border stations in 1973 from western Connaught divisions; and the number of times each of these men was transferred during that year.

I regret that I cannot see my way to supply statistics of this kind. The liability to transfer, in accordance with the exigencies of the service, is a normal and accepted part of the service of members of the Garda Síochána and I am not aware of any evidence or even of any serious suggestion that members from west Connaught are either favoured or discriminated against in this matter, though, as a general proposition, in the matter of temporary transfers, members from adjoining districts or divisions may be called on somewhat more often than members further away if only because such members can get home more easily at weekends, et cetera.

I may add that, if there were to be any complaint in relation to any such matter, it could be raised through the established machinery by the representative bodies concerned.
