Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin College of Technology.

202.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement regarding conditions in the College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin.

The City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee are investigating means of relieving accommodation problems in the College of Technology, Bolton Street and in the School of Distribution, Marlborough Street, in the short term. I expect that the committee's proposals in the matter will be submitted in the near future.

The long-term question of accommodation in the College of Technology is being reviewed in the light of proposals for third-level education generally and for third-level non-university education in Dublin in particular.

Does the Minister think that this kind of bland answer will cover the situation when there is student turmoil in Bolton Street? Furthermore, does the Minister think that passing the buck to the Vocational Education Committee is any way to solve the problem?

The Department are aware of accommodation problems at Bolton Street college, particularly in the case of architectural technicians. The Vocational Education Committee have examined a report from their consultants on the feasibility of leasing the old King's Hospital School in Blackhall Place to provide relief for the college's problems in the short term. The Department are awaiting the committee's proposals arising out of their consultancy.

I should like to know when these proposals are likely to be received because I think this building is one that should be preserved and, preferably, in the field of education.

I am afraid I do not know the answer.

203.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the threatened strike by students in Bolton Street College of Technology, Dublin.

I have not been informed of any threatened strike by the students of the College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin.

May I ask the Minister does he read the newspapers?

I am aware that it has been widely publicised by the media.

Questions Nos. 204 and 205 postponed.
