Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Manpower Service.

9.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will request the Government to direct all State and semi-State companies to fill the vacancies in their labour forces as far as possible through the National Manpower Service.

I would like to see State and semi-State bodies using the National Manpower Service to fill their vacancies to the greatest extent possible. Some are already doing so.

I do not intend to seek a Government direction compelling such bodies to use the service but the question of increasing the use of the service by them will be kept under review.

10.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of companies in Counties Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo, Longford, Westmeath, Mayo and Galway that notify vacancies to the National Manpower Service; and if he is satisfied with this number.

The number of employers in these counties who have notified vacancies to the National Manpower Service is 717. Particulars of the number in each county are contained in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

I regard the position as satisfactory having regard to the fact that offices have yet to be opened in two of the counties and some of the existing offices were opened only recently. I would expect these numbers to increase substantially according as the service is further developed.

Following is the statement:

County

Number of employers

Roscommon

18

Leitrim

12

Sligo

153

Longford

65

Westmeath

Would the Parliamentary Secretary indicate the counties awaiting the opening of offices?

It is hoped to open offices shortly in the following locations: Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim; Ballina and Castlebar, County Mayo.
