Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conservation Recommendations.

65.

asked the Minister for Lands the steps the Government have taken to comply with the Stockholm recommendation for an international convention to include representative samples of all ecosystems which have scientific value of international significance and in particular which contain genetic resources which it is important to conserve as well as threatened animal and plant species and their habitats.

While the Stockholm Conference had a number of recommendations affecting ecosystems of international significance, I am not aware of any which follows the precise lines indicated in the question. As far as my Department are concerned these recommendations are being kept under review for such action as may from time to time be appropriate. For example I would regard the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve—officially dedicated by the Minister last month—as a project of such international significance as to comply with the aims of the relevant recommendations of the conference.

Is the Minister aware of the situation that prevails in one of our internationally important ecosystems at Bull Island, Clontarf? Can the Minister give us any assurances that this important wildlife and bird habitat will be conserved?

No, I have not that information.
