Vol. 271 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lifford Post Office Facilities.

116.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the deplorable working accommodation and facilities for staff at Lifford Head Post Office, County Donegal, consisting of an area of 240 square feet for 15 girls and eight men, 11 of whom are on duty at the same time, and one toilet and handbasin for all; and if he will indicate how soon this position can be remedied and how.

I am aware that the accommodation provided for telephone operating staff at Lifford Post Office is inadequate, but my information is that the position is not quite as bad as the Deputy suggests. A site is being acquired for a new manual telephone exchange and the work of providing and equipping the building is being pushed ahead with all possible speed. It is hoped to have a larger and more modern exchange operational by the end of this year.

When it is expected that this manual exchange will come into operation?

In about nine to ten month's time.
