Vol. 271 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Capital Inflow.

3.

asked the Minister for Finance the capital inflow in each of the last five years; and the percentage of all new jobs dependent on this inflow.

The following are the yearly figures for Ireland's net capital inflow in the period 1968-1972. The outturn for the year 1973 is not yet available.

£million

1968

8.4

1969

75.0

1970

67.7

1971

161.8

1972

106.9

Because of the diverse nature of capital inflows it is not possible directly to relate them to job creation. However, the IDA estimate that approximately 60 per cent of all new job approvals over the period in question are attributable to foreign capital investment.

Has the Minister any information, since the publication of his White Paper on Capital Taxation, on whether there has been any diminution of capital inflow?

No. Present indications are that the quantity of foreign capital inflow into this country in 1974 will increase.

Could the Minister indicate whether the indications, to which he has referred in relation to 1974, cover the period since the 28th February, the date of the publication of the White Paper?

Which indications is the Minister referring to?

The ones to which the Deputy is referring.

I was referring to the ones the Minister referred to. Would the Minister inform the House to what indications he was referring?

I am referring to the ones the Deputy is referring to, the indications which show that the inflow of foreign capital into this country will be greater than it was last year which indications are the most up-to-date indications.

May I ask the Minister again, because perhaps he did not understand the question: to which indications was he referring?

I am afraid we are indulging in argument now.

We are not getting an answer.

The Deputy got a most clear and explicit answer. The indications to which the Deputy is referring are those we are receiving day after day.

Question No. 4.

The Minister is indicating something very clearly at the moment.

I cannot be responsible for Deputy Colley's inability to understand.
