Vol. 272 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road and Footpath Widths.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make new regulations regarding the widths of roads and footpaths in residential areas.

Planning authorities may include standards and specifications in relation to the construction of roads and footpaths in their development plans and many of them have done this. Under section 26 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, conditions may be attached to planning permissions specifying standards for roads and footpaths in housing estates. However the Act does not empower me to make regulations for the construction of roads and footpaths.

At the request of my Department An Foras Forbartha prepared recommendations for site development works for housing areas. Their report has been circulated to housing authorities and will be published by An Foras shortly. I have asked housing authorities generally to adopt these standards in their own schemes and to encourage their use in private housing developments.
