Vol. 272 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Conservation.

62.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the plans he has to protect fish stocks from oil pollution, industrial working and unregulated industrial development.

I have no statutory function in relation to the prevention of pollution. I am, however, concerned to ensure that industrial and mineral development should not interfere with the environment, including in that term our waterways.

All prospecting and mining licences and off-shore petroleum leases are granted subject to stringent antipollution provisions.

The Industrial Development Authority, in collaboration with the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards, ensure that all grant-aided industries comply with the conditions in regard to pollution laid down by the appropriate authorities, including the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and payment of grants is subject to compliance with these conditions.

Under the re-equipment grants scheme, the IDA also assist existing firms to instal effluent treatment plants.

The Deputy will be aware that all industrial development, whether grant-aided or not, is subject to planning permission. Promoters must obtain planning permission from local authorities, who stipulate whatever measures they consider necessary for the protection of the environment.
