Vol. 272 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cold Stores Grants.

64.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the IDA have received applications for grants to build cold stores to accommodate meat sold into intervention under EEC regulations; and whether any decision has been taken to provide grants to meat factories for this purpose from the Exchequer.

I have been informed that the Industrial Development Authority have received applications from companies interested in providing cold storage facilities for beef sold into intervention under EEC regulations. The IDA would not normally consider grant applications from storage companies towards the provision of additional storage facilities. In the case of intervention storage, however, the authority are prepared to consider grant-aiding the provision of up to about one million cubic feet of storage capacity together with a number of blast freezers. In each instance it will be necessary for the applicant to obtain the approval of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries who act as the Irish intervention agents.
