Vol. 272 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Toxic Waste Dumping.

106.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is satisfied that the regulations in operation will prevent the dumping of toxic wastes such as occurred in refuse dumps in the English midlands in February, 1972.

I am satisfied that local authorities have adequate powers under planning and sanitary legislation to enable them to deal with the disposal of waste and refuse including solid toxic waste. With the rapid increase in industrialisation and mining activities the disposal of toxic waste may give rise to problems in the future. The position is being kept under review, therefore, in the light of developments abroad, including the consideration of toxic waste problems under the EEC environment programme, with a view to the introduction of any additional control measures that may be necessary.
