Vol. 272 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tent Site Conditions.

108.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will establish a working party to draw up a blueprint to improve conditions at all tent sites with a view to updating legislation in this matter.

Local authorities have wide powers to control camping sites under both planning and sanitary legislation, and to require necessary standards to be maintained. This is in addition to the controls exercised by Bord Fáilte by way of registration of such sites. Overall I believe that the existing statutory powers are adequate.

Would it not be better to have regulations that would apply nationally rather than to have regulations that vary from one authority to another?

The regulations are national but the interpretation of them may vary from one area to another. This is a situation that we have been attempting to rectify because we are anxious that the administration of the planning legislation be uniform throughout the country.
