Vol. 272 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Brucellosis Eradication Scheme.

26.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of dissatisfaction with the speed at which the brucellosis eradication scheme is being administered; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The brucellosis eradication scheme is progressing as rapidly as circumstances permit and the situation is being kept under constant review. The scheme was extended to two further counties during the past year and in those counties where the scheme is not yet in operation a pre-intensive brucellosis scheme was introduced with a view to securing a reduction in the incidence of the disease before compulsory measures are introduced.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in my county where the brucellosis scheme is in operation farmers are completely dissatisfied with the control and movement of cattle from counties where the disease is supposed to have been eradicated? Is he also aware that the farmers claim that the buyers come at any time of the day and that they leave cattle too long on the farms?

In County Galway 10,500 were removed and in Clare the number was 12,000. The numbers are relatively big.
