Vol. 272 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Post Office Services.

32.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the arrangements that have been made to provide normal post office services in the Tolka Valley/South Finglas housing estates, Dublin.

The post office services at present provided in the Tolka Valley/South Finglas area are regarded as catering adequately for current needs. The area is still in course of development, however, and the need for additional facilities will be kept under review.

Will the Minister say how near to the Tolka Valley area are the present postal facilities?

The nearest sub-post offices are Finglas and Cappagh to the north and Fassaugh Avenue, Cabra, to the south. Most of the occupied houses are within a radial distance of about three-quarters of a mile of Cappagh sub-post office.

Will the Minister not agree that three-quarters of a mile as the crow flies can constitute a hardship for a lady who has to push a pram for this distance when she goes to the sub-post office to use the postal facilities or collect the children's allowances?

I accept that a distance of this kind can entail an inconvenience, an inconvenience that unfortunately many people in many areas, and in many countries, have to put up with. However, I will tell the Deputy that as the development goes on in the area the situation will be kept under review and, no doubt, it will be possible to have extra postal facilities.
