Vol. 272 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chilean Fishmeal.

80.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that fishmeal imported from Chile can cause stomach upsets; and if he will take steps to ensure suitable action in the matter.

I understand that fishmeal is not at present being imported from Chile into Ireland.

Fishmeal is commonly used in feedingstuffs for poultry, pigs and other animals reared intensively and infected feedingstuffs can be a source of human infection by salmonella. However laboratory tests done within the last six months on poultry and other feedingstuffs in this country did not establish the presence of salmonella organisms in them. The matter is being kept under review.
