Vol. 272 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Phoenix Park Bye-Laws.

35.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange for a more prominent display of the bye-laws, appertaining to the Phoenix Park, Dublin, for the convenience of visitors and users.

Mr. Kenny

The Phoenix Park bye-laws are displayed on reasonably large notice boards at each of the nine main gates to the park, and this would appear to be an adequate display of the bye-laws.

36.

asked the Minister for Finance if he proposes to introduce any special measures to restrain the unauthorised parking and driving of cars which is causing so much despoliation in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Mr. Kenny

The question of unauthorised parking and of limiting vehicular traffic in the Phoenix Park is under examination. I am not yet in a position to say what measures may be introduced to deal with the problems.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that cars are being parked on the grass in the Phoenix Park, causing considerable damage to it? This is particularly applicable on days when there is a race meeting in the park. Is he aware that this parking by thousands of cars is occurring with the permission and indeed the approval of the Board of Works, who charge for this?

Mr. Kenny

I was not aware that permission was being given by my office for the parking of cars. However it has been the experience that in various parks, motorists, especially on Sundays, drive on to grass margins without permission. I never realised that permission had been sought and granted by the Board of Works for parking on the grass in the Phoenix Park.

The Board of Works are charging for this service. I suggest it should be discontinued.

Mr. Kenny

I never knew it was occurring.

I wrote in about it —not to you but to your predecessor.

Mr. Kenny

I will look into it.
