Vol. 273 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children's Allowances.

12.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of children in respect of whom children's allowances are paid, under the children's allowances legislation, to the mother.

In the case of approximately 995,000 of the children in respect of whom children's allowances were being paid as at 30th April, 1974, that is, about 90 per cent of the total, the allowance was in payment to the mother.

13.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of children in respect of whom children's allowances are paid under the children's allowances legislation.

As at 30th April, 1974, children's allowances were in payment in respect of 1,106,242 children.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary agree that this figure is inaccurate due to the fact that there was a claw-back and while the mother was being paid it was deducted from her husband's income in certain cases?

The question of taxation does not apply to my Department. The question asked was the number of children's allowances paid and that was the question that was answered.

Question No. 14.

I am not quite clear on the figures the Parliamentary Secretary gave. He gave 1.1 odd million in response to this question. I take it that is the number of children in respect of whom children's allowances were paid. What was the figure of 900,000 odd which the Parliamentary Secretary gave in reply to the previous question? I thought he said that was the number in respect of whom children's allowances were paid?

I said paid to the mothers.

Sorry. I thought the Parliamentary Secretary was giving the total figure.

If the Parliamentary Secretary has not got the net figure could he issue it later?

I have given the Deputy the figures sought. If he wishes to put down a question with regard to taxation I suggest he address that question to the appropriate Minister.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that I am alleging that the figure he has given are inaccurate?

I do not accept the Deputy's allegation for one moment. He may be confused because there has been an increase all right under the present Administration and in certain cases children's allowances are paid between the ages of 16 and 18.
