Vol. 273 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Vacancies.

37.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if he will allow serving personnel in the Defence Forces who are near retiring age to apply for temporary posts in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, as applicants must at present be nominated by local employment exchanges.

The National Manpower Service is notified of vacancies in subordinate positions in the Civil Service which do not have to be filled through the Civil Service Commission and is asked to submit persons registered with it to fill these vacancies. This method of filling such positions has operated successfully for many years.

Members of the Defence Forces who are reaching retiring age may register with the manpower service and so be considered for any Civil Service positions for which nominations are sought from that service.

Would the Minister elaborate on the last sentence or two? Do I understand from him that a serving member of the Defence Forces may register with the National Manpower Service for consideration whilst still serving in the Defence Forces?

That is so. He can register while still serving.
