Vol. 273 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ship and Boat Building Industries.

144.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of persons employed in the ship and boat building industries at 1st January 1974; and the number of such yards and the total value of their production and exports in 1973.

The total number of persons engaged in the ship and boat building and repairing industry in mid-December 1973, the nearest relevant date for which the information required by the Deputy is available, has been estimated at 2,000. The total number of ship building yards registered in the offices of the Revenue Commissioners under section 37 of the Finance Act, 1932, in the State on 1st January, 1974, was 46. The total value of the output of the ship and boat building and repairing industry as covered in the Census of Industrial Production for 1972, which is the latest year for which this information is at present available, amounted to £13.5 million. Total exports of ships and boats were valued at £7.3 million in 1972 and £10.2 million in 1973. These exports are not all necessarily the output of Irish shipyards in those years as they would include sales of Irish registered ships abroad in addition to newly built vessels.
