Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Science Teaching.

61.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the concern regarding the facilities for teaching science to metalwork trainee teachers in the College of Technology, Bolton Street, Dublin; if any complaints have been investigated; and if it is proposed to transfer the course elsewhere.

I am satisfied on the basis of the information available to me that there are adequate facilities for the teaching of science to the students of the course for metalwork teachers in the College of Technology, Bolton Street.

It is not intended to transfer the course elsewhere in the immediate future.

My information is that the facilities are primitive almost for the teaching of science. Was there a promise given some time ago that the course would, in fact, be transferred elsewhere?

My information through official channels is different from that of the Deputy. It has been indicated to me that, when the course was transferred to Bolton Street in 1972, there were initially some teething troubles. Any shortcomings that existed were brought to the notice of the Department and to the notice of the director of the course and these have now, I understand, been remedied.
