Vol. 273 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dance Hall Lighting System.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the regulations governing the licensing of dance halls, which stipulate that a patented emergency lighting system must be installed, has had the effect of closing many rural halls which cannot afford such a system; and if he will sanction other systems which, though not patented, are just as effective.

I am not aware of any regulations of the kind referred to. The licensing of public dance halls is a matter for the District Courts in accordance with the provisions of the Public Dance Halls Act, 1935, and I have no function in relation to such licensing. I am aware however that it is the practice of local authorities to inspect premises for which licences are sought and to recommend any appropriate fire safety requirements to the courts. It is a matter for the court to determine the conditions of licence. A right of appeal to the Circuit Court is provided for in the Act.
