As I indicated on 16th May, 1974, in reply to the debate on the Estimate for Defence, compulsory military service is not in our tradition. I have no plans to change that situation. We have always relied on voluntary enlistment and I am confident that, with the active support of all our people, the Defence Forces can be brought up to adequate strength on this basis.
