Vol. 274 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Construction Industry Common Market.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if any steps have been taken or are planned to overcome the technical and legal obstacles hampering the development of a common market in construction; and if there are plans for the long-term forecasting of construction output and demand.

As I indicated in my reply to parliamentary Question No. 113 of the 5th July, 1973, the Commission of the European Communities has, for the purpose of promoting the development of a common market in the construction industry throughout the Community, established working parties to make proposals for the elimination of technical and legal obstacles to such a development, the co-ordination of national construction industry research programmes and for the preparation of a common framework and nomenclature to facilitate forecasts of output and demand for the industry. Representatives of my Department have participated in the meetings of the working parties. I understand that a draft programme of work has now been drawn up and is to be submitted to the Council of Minister for approval.

Could the Minister say when these proposals might become public knowledge?

I cannot say because they have only recently been drawn up.

I am glad to hear there is some progress.
