Vol. 274 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Phoenix Park Arboretum.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider, in consultation with the Department of Lands, the provision of a small area in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, for use as an arboretum.

I will have the question of the desirability of establishing a small arboretum in the Phoenix Park considered in consultation with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries who manage the national Botanic Gardens and who are cooperating with the Office of Public Works in the planning of an arboretum at the Killarney National Park.

I understand the Office of Public Works, in consultation with the Departments of Lands and Agriculture and Fisheries, have made arrangements to replant all the major trees in the park that are becoming aged. Perhaps the Minister might consider setting aside this special area in conjunction with the programme already laid down?

I am advised that an arboretum is a collection of trees grown as specimen plants whether planted for botanical interests or as an ornament around a house or in a garden. As indicated in my reply, we will avail of the services of the Departments of Agriculture and Fisheries and Lands in endeavouring to provide such an amenity in the Phoenix Park.

The Minister is probably aware that prior to the change of Government a plan had been prepared for the replanting of the major trees in the park. Surely this request can be fitted into that programme?

I think it probably can to some extent but I would not like to make a final decision on the matter. The Phoenix Park is primarily an area for public recreation and some of the specimens that would be suitable for an arboretum might not be the most appropriate for an area open to the public because of the particular delicacy of the specimens. However, in so far as it is possible to provide this amenity without any damage, I am sure it will be done.

I will repeat my question in a few months' time.
