Vol. 274 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Elderly Persons' Dwellings.

4.

asked the Minister for Local Government if local authorities give grants to a voluntary body for the purchase of land suitable for the erection of houses for old people.

Under section 12 of the Housing Act, 1966, a housing authority may, with my consent and on such terms and conditions as they think fit, assist a body whose objects include the provision of dwellings for elderly persons, either in respect of the provision by the body of housing accommodation or in respect of some other matter, in one or more of the following ways:

(a) by a loan,

(b) by a periodic contribution to the funds of the body,

(c) by a guarantee of sums owed by the body in respect of borrowing.

No housing authority has sought my consent to the making of such contributions for the purchase of land suitable for the erection of houses for elderly persons.

If such a request comes to the Minister, will he consider it favourably?

I will consider it.
