Vol. 274 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon and Pork Price.

39.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the price of bacon and pork increased by 14 per cent approximately between May, 1973, and May, 1974, despite the fact that a 200 lb liveweight pig fell in price by £5 in that period; and if he will take steps to rectify the position immediately.

I am aware of the increase in retail prices of bacon and pork in this period, although in the case of pork my information is that the increase was somewhat less than is suggested by the Deputy.

In view of the fact that the reduction in the price of pigs has not been reflected in reduced consumer prices for bacon and pork I am asking the National Prices Commission to investigate the matter.

I thank the Minister for the reply and if I have brought to his notice a factual case will he be able to communicate back with me after having it investigated?

Yes, indeed.
