Vol. 274 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Technical Education.

73.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any proposals for the greater intensification and development in the coming year of second level technical instruction and education within the meaning of the Vocational Education Act, 1930; and if he will arrange for special courses of technical instruction to be introduced as an alternative to the leaving certificate for courses in catering, agriculture, electrical installation work, secretarial subjects, woodwork and building construction, motor engineering and farm machinery maintenance; and if he will have one post-primary school in each county equipped to conduct such courses.

Mr. R. Burke

The development of technical instruction and education within the meaning of the Vocational Education Act, 1930, is laid as a statutory duty on the vocational education committee for each area. Special courses of technical instruction in various subject areas are already available in schools conducted by Vocational Education Committees and syllabuses in a wider range of subjects have been introduced in recent years for the purpose of the Leaving Certificate Examination. Any other proposals for the recognition of courses in technical subjects will be carefully considered.
