Vol. 274 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Pollution.

91.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give an assurance that increased pollution in Irish waters, particularly from lead, arsenic and mercury, will not constitute a danger to users of processed sea-weed.

I have no evidence to show that the levels of lead, arsenic, or mercury in Irish seawater are increasing, or that the level of any of these substances in processed seaweed products is such as to constitute a health danger to users of such products.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary undertake to give more prominence to that reply because he will appreciate that this can do immense damage to the sale of fish to the consumer public at a time when we are trying to expand the market?

The less publicity it gets the better.

I agree that that reply should get the same prominence as the other report did.

The Parliamentary Secretary will agree that the report was a little worrying? I agree with Deputy Brennan that he should give prominence to the fact that the danger does not exist.
