Vol. 274 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Health Services.

93.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the fact that the comprehensive health scheme has not been implemented, he will indicate how persons on holiday in EEC countries will fare if they become ill.

The EEC regulations which are relevant to this question provide that insured persons from an EEC country who are staying temporarily in another EEC country are, together with their dependants, entitled to any urgent medical attention which they may require on the same basis as eligible persons in the host country.

In general, these services are provided free of charge in the other member states of the EEC but in some instances the patient may be required to pay part of the cost. Details of the arrangements which operate in the separate countries of the EEC are given in a leaflet entitled Medical Care and the Visitor to Common Market Countries which my Department has issued to health boards and to travel agents. The provisions which are described in this leaflet are not affected by the delay in extending limited eligibility to health services.
