Vol. 275 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Raheny (Dublin) School.

38.

asked the Minister for Finance when the general purpose room promised for St. Benedict's school, Grange Park, Raheny, Dublin and other facilities and amenities which are urgently required will be provided.

Tenders for a general purposes room and associated amenities have been submitted by the manager's architect to the Commissioners of Public Works. The commissioners hope to be in a position to authorise the acceptance of a tender within the next two to three weeks.

Precisely what work is covered by the tender to which the Parliamentary Secretary referred?

Mr. Kenny

I have not got that information here, but I will give the Deputy what I have. Working contracts were prepared and approved by the Commissioners of Public Works and the invitation of tenders was authorised. I have not had a look as the type of plans forwarded by the manager's architect to the commissioners but, if the Deputy wishes, I will get the plans or, at least, tell him what they propose.

I am quite prepared to leave the matter safely in the hands of the Parliamentary Secretary, but may I ask him to take note of the fact that there are a number of different facilities and amenities required in this school including, in particular, a general purpose room?

Mr. Kenny

That is included. The type of general purpose room is not described here, but I think we all have an idea of what it should be.

Indeed, we have.

Mr. Kenny

I Certainly have.

May I ask the Parliamentary Secretary to take note of the fact that this is a very important school in this area with an enormous number of pupils? For a number of years now it has been very, very sadly lacking in very necessary amenities and facilities and would the Parliamentary Secretary take a personal interest in this work and endeavour to have these badly-needed amenities and facilities provided as quickly as possible?

Mr. Kenny

I will take particular note of that. I know the Deputy is particularly interested because he has asked numerous questions about this school over the years, questions addressed to the Department of Education, and I understand he is very, very concerned about the provision of the amenities and facilities he wishes to have in the school.
