Vol. 275 No. 8

Ceisteanna——Questions. Oral Answers. - Bog Development Grants.

142.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make available a special money allocation to county councils for the development of bogs and bog-roads in order to encourage increased hand-won turf production.

As I indicated to the Deputy on 21st February, 1974, in the course of my reply to his previous question on this subject, small grants from funds provided in the Vote for Transport and Power are available for the improvement and maintenance of bog and accommodation roads over which turf is removed from bogs for delivery to the power stations at Gweedore, Screebe, Miltown-Malbay and Cahirciveen. There are no funds at my disposal from which a grant for other roads, or for development of bogs, could be made available.

Grants are available to county councils for improvement works under the local improvements scheme administered by the Department of Local Government. The scheme includes bog roads and drains.
