Vol. 275 No. 8

Ceisteanna——Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Control.

150.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he accepts the view of the National Prices Commission, as expressed in paragraph 19 of their report for June, 1974, to the effect that the bringing of more goods within the scope of maximum price control at retail level would be likely to exacerbate consumers' problems and on balance might make prices higher on average than they otherwise would have been.

I realise the problems associated with the fixing of statutory maximum retail prices for goods, as set out in the June, 1974, report of the National Prices Commission. Nevertheless, where there is evidence of gross overcharging for particular products, or a likelihood that this will occur, I have thought it desirable to fix maximum prices at a level which will give a fair return to efficient traders. The National Prices Commission have sought the views of various interested bodies on the relevant section of their June report and will then make recommendations to me. I will, of course, carefully consider these recommendations.
