Vol. 275 No. 8

Ceisteanna——Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

120.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when automatic telephone service will be provided in Ballyconneely, County Galway.

Ballyconneely telephone exchange is not included in current automatisation programmes which will take some years to complete. It is not therefore possible at this stage to give any reliable estimate of the conversion date.

121.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when automatic telephone service will be provided in Clifden, County Galway.

It is expected that Clifden telephone exchange will be converted to automatic working in about four years' time.

122.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when automatic telephone service will be provided at Kilronan, Aran Islands, County Galway.

It is hoped to convert Kilronan telephone exchange to automatic working in about three to four years' time.

123.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the areas of County Wexford not yet served by automatic dial telephones; and the proposals his Department has in respect of those areas.

There are at present nine exchange areas in County Wexford which do not have automatic telephone service. Of these it is expected that Taghmon will be converted to automatic working in December; Ballymoney, Cleariestown and Murrintown about April next; and Bridgetown and Tomhaggard about May.

A firm forecast for the conversion of the remaining three exchanges, namely, Ballycanew, Ballygarrett and Hollyfort, is not possible at present, but it is unlikely that they can be changed over before 1977.

124.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the present midnight to 8 a.m. "non-wakeful" telephone service at Carndonagh Post Office, County Donegal, will be replaced by normal daytime service for the benefit of hospital, ambulance, fire brigade and other services.

A 24-hour telephone service is provided at Carndonagh exchange. I am not aware of any difficulties with the present service during the period midnight to 8 a.m. If the Deputy will let me have particulars, I shall have them investigated.

125.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there is no telephone service, public or private, in the highly populated area of Tolka Valley, Finglas, Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is planned to erect two telephone kiosks in this area within the next few weeks. There are about ten telephone subscribers in the area and arrangements are in hand to provide two additional private telephones there.
