Vol. 275 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Advance Factory Development.

14.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the second stage of advance factory development being carried out by the IDA will include Dromore West, Easkey, Enniscrone, Ballymote and Grange in County Sligo and Manorhamilton, Kinlough, Drumkeerin in County Leitrim.

The second advance factory programme provides for an advance factory in Ballymote. I understand that tenders have been received by the Industrial Development Authority and work is expected to start shortly. An advance factory, under the earlier programme, was scheduled for Manorhamilton but, owing to difficulty in the acquisition of a site, construction has not yet commenced.

There are no plans at present to provide advance factories in the other places mentioned by the Deputy. In Easkey however the authority, in conjunction with the local authority, are seeking a site of five acres for industrial development.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the IDA has made any proposals for the development of advance factories in Elphin or Strokestown, County Roscommon.

I have been informed that the Industrial Development Authority have no plans to construct advance factories at Elphin or Strokestown in the immediate future.

The first and second IDA advance factory programmes, however, provide for four advance factories in nearby towns in County Roscommon. These are located at Castlerea and Roscommon town, where the factories are already completed; at Boyle, where construction has already begun; and at Ballaghadereen, where work is expected to commence in January, 1975.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the urgent necessity to provide advance factories and industrial sites at Millstreet and Newmarket, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Millstreet and Newmarket are included with Kanturk and other towns in a group of north Cork towns for which the Industrial Development Authority have specified a target of 500 new jobs in their regional industrial plans. Within this group Newmarket and Kanturk are together regarded as a joint development area.

The task of encouraging industrial development has been entrusted to the Industrial Development Authority and it is primarily for the authority to decide which means are the most appropriate to attract industry to any particular area.

I understand however that an industrial site of eight-and-a-half acres has been acquired at Kanturk and that tenders will shortly be sought for the construction of an advance factory of 10,000 sq. ft. there. There are at present no plans to provide an advance factory or an industrial site at Millstreet.
