Vol. 275 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physical Education Programmes.

56.

asked the Minister for Education the number of post-primary schools that have active physical education programmes conducted by trained or qualified physical education personnel; the inducements that will be offered to those schools that have not such facilities to establish them; and if there will be sufficient posts in the immediate future to absorb all the students at present in training at the College of Physical Education in Limerick.

Mr. R. Burke

Physical education programmes conducted by qualified teachers are available in 250 secondary schools, apart from programmes in schools under the vocational education committees for which statistics are not immediately available in the Department.

Equipment grants to secondary schools for the purpose of physical education are paid under the scheme of grants which also applies to science, woodwork and metalwork. In so far as financial resources allow, sports facilities are provided in connection with secondary school premises where the number of pupils to be enrolled in the school warrant such provision.

I am satisfied that there will be employment available for the students qualifying as physical education teachers in the College of Physical Education, Limerick.
