Vol. 276 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Estate.

22.

asked the Minister for Lands if any negotiations are in train for the acquisition of the Van Den Dries estate, Wolfhill, County Laois.

(Cavan): The Land Commission have had the question of acquiring the property referred to under review for some time but have decided to take no further action in the matter.

Could the Minister say why?

(Cavan): The Land Commission investigated the question of acquiring the land but decided in January, 1974, to take no action because of the lack of deserving local congests and the unsuitability of the land for migrant holdings. I am told that of the 165 acres concerned there are 45 acres of fair grazing and that the balance is heavy, rushy and wet.

Did the Minister say there are no deserving local congests in the area?

(Cavan): That is my information.

Would the Minister ask the Land Commission to review the position? Is that a positive decision that has been taken?

(Cavan): It is, but I will ask them to review the matter.
