Vol. 277 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Environment Measures.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government the steps the Government are taking to conform with European measures regarding the environment.

While a number of measures have been approved under the Community environment programme they have not yet been formally adopted. Among measures expected to come into operation in the near future are directives on the quality of surface water to be used for drinking purposes and on the disposal of waste oils, as well as recommendations on the polluter pays principle and on energy and the environment. As I indicated to the Deputy in reply to a question on 12th December, the standards of the water directive are already being followed by local authorities in this country. The action to be taken in relation to the other decisions is at present under consideration.

Could the Minister indicate when he expects some progress in this matter?

It is on-going. Already it is being done with regard to water, and the others are done as they come along.
