Vol. 277 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Fishery Facilities.

8.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will have a wharf provided at Ferry Point, Youghal, County Cork, to facilitate deep sea anglers and other fishermen.

The question of providing a wharf at Ferry Point, Youghal, to facilitate deep sea anglers and other fishermen has been fully examined by my Department but, in view of the facilities which are available across the bay at Youghal, it is considered that such a project would not be justified.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary further consider the urgent necessity for this facility and in conjunction with his colleague, the Minister for Transport and Power, receive a deputation on the matter?

The report from our inspectors in relation to this wharf is not too favourable and it seems unlikely that we can provide for this work in the current year. I will discuss the matter with the Deputy and if he has any further factors to bring to bear on the question they will be examined. That would possibly be the best way to deal with the matter.

Is the Minister aware that the local angling association is already in touch with his colleague, the Minister for Transport and Power?

In regard to deep sea angling, the local anglers association and the Inland Fisheries Trust, which is the body for development, state that the cost of erecting a wharf at Ferry Point would not be justified in the view of the facilities that exist across the river. That is the comment by the Inland Fisheries Trust so the Deputy will appreciate that even that body is not favourably disposed towards such expenditure.

9.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will have alternative landing and berthing facilities provided for boats fishing out of Cobh, County Cork, when the deep water quay is taken over for the servicing of oil rigs.

The question of the need for alternative landing and berthing facilities for the fishing fleet operating out of Cobh in the event of that port being closed to them is being examined in my Department at present.
