Vol. 277 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Garda Stations.

44.

asked the Minister for Justice when the programme of renewal of rural Garda stations was commenced; and how long research in this regard was in hands.

While some progress has been made in the replacement of obsolete Garda stations during the years, an accelerated programme of Garda building began in 1973. The Commissioner was asked to draw up a list of stations in need of replacement or major repair. This list is now the basis of a co-ordinated effort from the Office of Public Works, the Commissioner and my Department, to have the necessary work carried out with as much speed as possible.

The accumulated research of previous years was used in drawing up the list. In addition, before major works are carried out on a station, the Garda research and planning unit normally reviews the needs of the locality. The time needed for this type of research varies from area to area.
